When to prune frost damaged plants

Wait to prune anything immediately after a freeze. The best time to start pruning back damaged plants is when the threat of frost is over and new growth begins to sprout with warmer temperatures, which may be late February. Damaged leaves actually help to insulate the plant from further winter injury. This is also the case for mowing lawns which are frozen. Keep mowers off lawns until late morning when the frost has melted off, keep mower at the highest setting, and never scalp a lawn right before a freeze is expected. Keeping your lawn mowed at the highest setting allows the longer leaf tissue insulate the older foliage from further damage.
